Arcadis is the world’s leading company delivering sustainable design, engineering, and consultancy solutions for natural and built assets. With sustainability at the heart of everything we do, our focus is on maximizing our impact aimed at improving quality of life. One of our strategic priorities in the 2021 – 2023 strategy is to contribute to the energy transition.
Since the Paris climate agreement was signed, the target has been that CO2 emissions in the Netherlands must be reduced by 95% compared to 1990. Many parties can be identified that contribute to these emissions. The industry is one of the largest contributors, together the industry emits more than 50% of the total CO2 emissions! It is therefore of great importance that the industry as a whole becomes more sustainable in order to be able to achieve the climate agreement.
This is easier said than done. There are good ways to achieve this: CO2 can be captured and green energy forms such as hydrogen, wind and solar energy and electrification can be used. In short, the industry must completely get rid of fossil fuels.
This poses a major energy infrastructure issue: the energy network for the transport of this (new) green energy generation has to be adapted to a large extent or even designed and constructed.
The demand for energy is increasing and it must be supplied. The infrastructure is changing as a result: wind energy from offshore wind farms must be transported to land, captured CO2 must be stored underground, green energy generated must be able to be stored, and charging must become increasingly accessible for electric vehicles (think of the fast chargers at a filling station). ).
As Arcadis, we will tackle this major social issue and advise how this can be achieved, specifically for the industrial sector. Arcadis has set great ambitions for this itself!
