Partners 2018

The Ministry of Economy and Climate promotes the Netherlands as a country of enterprise with a strong international competitive position and an eye for sustainability. It is committed to creating an excellent entrepreneurial business climate, by creating the right conditions and giving entrepreneurs room to innovate and grow. By paying attention to nature and the living environment. By encouraging cooperation between research institutes and businesses. This is how we enhance our leading positions in agriculture, industry, services and energy and invest in a powerful, sustainable country.

We stand for an energy supply that gives everyone equal access to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. That is what we work on every day.

Energy is essential for our well-being and our prosperity. Without energy we cannot heat our homes, cook, teach, communicate, ensure traffic safety, operate trains and keep our financial system up and running. Energy enables us to live, work and travel. Without energy everything would come to a standstill. It is the oxygen that keeps our society running.

Rijkswaterstaat is the executive agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. We manage and develop the main road network, the main waterway network and the main water systems and endeavour to create a sustainable living environment.

We work with others to ensure that the country is protected against flooding, that there is sufficient green space and an adequate supply of clean water, and that its citizens are able to travel quickly and safely from A to B. Jointly promoting safety, mobility and the quality of life in the Netherlands is what Rijkswaterstaat stands for.

Social developments and government policy are presenting new challenges to Rijkswaterstaat in relation to mobility, safety and sustainability. And, like the government as a whole, Rijkswaterstaat has to cut spending. In light of Rijkswaterstaat’s ambitions and the changing demands being placed upon the organisation, Rijkswaterstaat is constantly exploring possibilities to carry out its operations even more effectively and efficiently. For example, we collaborate increasingly frequently with other infrastructure managers, as well as critically reviewing our tasks and assessing which of them we might be able to outsource to the market.

Energy will become increasingly scarce and therefore more expensive in the future. Energy saving is, therefore, a necessity, of which everyone aware is: it prevents pollution and saves valuable raw materials. Besides that energy saving is good for the environment, it also benefits your company. Energy saving reduces your costs and your carbon footprint as well as it improves your competitive position. Founded in 1974, the IEA was initially designed to help countries co-ordinate a collective response to major disruptions in the supply of oil, such as the crisis of 1973/4. While this remains a key aspect of its work, the IEA has evolved and expanded significantly.

The IEA examines the full spectrum of energy issues including oil, gas and coal supply and demand, renewable energy technologies, electricity markets, energy efficiency, access to energy, demand side management and much more. Through its work, the IEA advocates policies that will enhance the reliability, affordability and sustainability of energy in its 30 member countries and beyond.

Today, the IEA is at the heart of global dialogue on energy, providing authoritative analysis through a wide range of publications, including the flagship World Energy Outlook and the IEA Market Reports; data and statistics, such as Key World Energy Statistics and the Monthly Oil Data Service; and a series of training and capacity building workshops, presentations, and resources.

TU Delft recognizes the imperative need to transition towards holistically sustainable systems, and this is underscored and omnipresent throughout research taking place within all the various faculties of the University. Furthermore, TU Delft accepts its responsibility to shine as a beacon of example, leading institutions and society alike in the pursuit of sustaining our planet.

The Green Office is TU Delft’s very own department devoted to sustainability in education, research and university operations. As such, it aims to connect innovative research, education, students, employees and campus management & operations, by facilitating and implementing measures to improve the sustainability performance of the TU Delft organization as a whole. By supporting existing initiatives in their activities, setting up new innovation projects, providing information on sustainable education and organising events, we connect students with staff and the relevant stakeholders at the university who can affect change.

TU Delft Energy Club is a student-led initiative committed to facilitate opportunities for sustainable energy enthusiasts.

We believe that students can have a positive impact on the energy transition. We are the intermediary between students, companies, research groups and the government within The Netherlands and Europe.

We facilitate events, projects, seminars, internships and excursions to empower students to become active contributors to the sustainable energy transition.

Being sustainable is not just about reducing our environmental footprint, it’s in all the choices we make – as a lender, as an investor and through the services we offer our customers. As a bank, we believe our role is to facilitate and finance society’s shift to sustainability. In other words: contribute to progress – environmental, economic, and social.

We facilitate the transition to a fairer, greener economy by financing sustainable projects and supporting clients that help solve environmental and social challenges. We measure this with “sustainable transitions financed”, or STF.

We check every wholesale transaction and client against our environmental and social risk policies. If they don’t meet our standards, and aren’t willing to change, we don’t do the deal.

We are one of the largest producers and suppliers of natural gas, electricity and heat in the Netherlands, serving more than 2 million business and residential customers. Wouldn’t it be great if we could all generate our own sustainable energy? Well, that’s no longer a vision of the future. It is happening right now, and more and more people are joining in. They are deciding how they generate, use, sell and share energy with others. Together with customers and partners, Eneco Group is looking for energy solutions that make it possible to live and work in a smarter way. At the moment we need the equivalent of 1.6* planets to provide the natural resources and services humanity consumes in a year. A growing number of people are concerned about the state of the Earth and adopting a more conscious lifestyle in response. We are convinced that people can take responsibility for their own energy and sustainability. And this also extends to the current energy transition and the pace at which it is unfurling. Our ambition is to bring our own energy consumption and that of our customers within the planet’s limits, to ensure that our planet remains liveable in the years ahead. Not only for ourselves, but also for future generations.

The world of oil and gas production is changing and will continue to do so. In the transition towards a low-CO2 energy supply, the share of conventional fuels such as natural gas will decrease due to the growth of renewable sources. By 2050 it is expected that the Dutch natural gas reserves will largely be exhausted. The Dutch oil and gas industry is working hard to make this new reality their own. A reality in which natural gas is no longer the natural best choice, but is used only where it contributes to CO2 reduction and where it does not get in the way of the development of renewable energy. We call this ‘Gas by Design’. During this transition, NOGEPA represents the interests of the companies who are licensed to explore for and produce oil and gas in the Netherlands. Thereby, they want to contribute to reaching a sustainable energy supply by 2050.

Energie Beheer Nederland (EBN) is a company that invests in the exploration, extraction and storage of gas and oil on behalf of the State. In a safe, sustainable and economically responsible manner EBN realises societal and economic value from the Dutch subsurface. EBN serves a public interest: contributing to an independent, reliable power supply in the Netherlands. We see that as an important social mission.

The energy system as we know it today will require major change. EBN calls for an energy supply that is safe, reliable, affordable and increasingly sustainable. A CO2 neutral energy supply in 2050 is aimed at in line with the Energy Report 2016. In EBN’s vision, natural gas can play an important role during the energy transition on the way to a sustainable and CO2 neutral energy future. All the more so because natural gas is a reliable source of energy that can be stored and in addition results in lesser CO2 emissions in relation to other fossil fuels.

Since the release of the white paper by Elon Musk about the Hyperloop concept, the interest in this concept has increased tremendously. In short, the Hyperloop is a conceptual high-speed ground transportation system incorporating reduced-pressure tubes in which pressurized vehicles travel. By doing this, the air resistance is so low that a vehicle can travel at almost the speed of sound while being a lot cheaper, more efficient, and more convenient than airplanes. To boost the development of a working prototype, Elon Musk’s company SpaceX organizes the Hyperloop competition. This competition entails travelling with a half-size capsule through a low pressure tube of 1.6 km in length, built by SpaceX in California.

Our team consists of 35 students from all faculties of the TU Delft. With this team and its experience we believe that we can look further, reach farther, work harder, and perform better than the other teams competing in the Hyperloop competition. Everyone in this team is extremely motivated to make the world cleaner, faster and more efficient. Our goal has been set: winning this competition and changing the future of transportation.

Hydrogen has long been the prospective replacement for fossil fuel in the automotive industry, only to see battery cars claim the stage in most recent years. Nonetheless hydrogen has a huge potential in becoming an important player in the energy transition. Once production is scaled up and carried out with the use of renewable energy the true benefits of using hydrogen will flourish on the energy market. Hydrogen has the ability to be stored and transported, as well as to fill up fuel tanks in under 3 minutes at ordinary gas stations. Not to mention that the current achievable driving range is already competitive with ordinary petrol cars. The Eco-Runner Team is a strong believer in the future of hydrogen and has made it into its mission to promote and develop this wonderful energy carrier.
